Monitor changes to directories
Makes EboBar be alert in the background and watch the scanned directories for changes. So instead of always rescanning your database again and again to keep it up to date, you can simply scan it once and enable this option.
EboBar can obviously only monitor changes while it's active. If EboBar is not running all the time, it cannot reliably keep track of everything that's new.
Default: Enabled.
Why would you want to enable it? It's more convenient to have EboBar keep track of changes rather than having to rescan all the time. It's especially useful if the directories EboBar is taking care of are constantly changing on your system.
Why would you not want to enable it? For one thing, some people hate programs monitoring their system in the background. Then, a change to a directory will be an insignificant impact on performance. It's usually not worth mentioning, but if there are often lots of file changes on your system, the background monitoring might be a nuisance. Especially when scanning directories takes a long time on your system, possibly because you're scanning files over a network.
NOTE: Background monitoring is not instant. It may take a few seconds until EboBar decides to rescan a directory after it has detected a change.
NOTE that the background monitor can under certain (rare) circumstances miss a change or two within your file system. You might still want to re-scan your directories from time to time (right-click the icon in the system tray) or enable "Scan directories on every EboBar launch".
Scan directories on every EboBar launch
Every time EboBar is started, the database will be re-scanned. If EboBar is started with Windows, your database will be consequently be re-scanned every time you boot windows.
Default: Disabled.
Why would you want to enable it? It will ensure that your database is pretty much up to date. Not as up to date as it would be with the "Monitor changes to directories" option, but still better than just re-scanning once in a month or something.
Why would you not want to enable it? Because scanning can take some time, especially when you have a lot directories that you wish to scan. This delay can be annoying, especially when EboBar is run together with Windows.
Show directory currently being scanned
Usually, EboBar displays a small window informing you that the database is currently being scanned (the next option allows you to control that behavior). If you check this box, that window will display which directory in particular is currently being investigated.
Default: Disabled.
Why would you want to enable it? It's interesting. You can see exactly what EboBar is up to, what it scans, which directory takes the most time. Besides, the scanning is less boring if some fancy text is zipping by all the time.
Why would you want to disable it? Some people might consider that rapidly changing string unnerving. Some others might disapprove of this "computer stuff".
(When to display the display box)
Usually, EboBar displays a small window informing you that the database is currently being scanned. This box allows you to choose between three different states:
Always display scan status box
Displays this window every time the database is scanned, under every circumstance.Display scan status box except during startup
Displays this window every time the database is scanned, unless this is an automatic scan performed during the startup of EboBar (see option "Scan directories on every EboBar launch")Never display scan status box
The window will never pop up.
Why would you want to enable the box? It's good to see what EboBar is up to.
Why would you want to disable the box? Seeing that box every time you start Windows can be boring.
