What is EboBar?
What is EboBar?
In short? A program that lets you launch applications and documents with just a few key presses. Much more efficient than using the mouse. I'll get into detail later on.
Oh zippi-doo. Hey, hotkeys are already built into Windows, spam-for-brains.
Who's talking about hotkeys? They have a number of disadvantages:
You have to assign them first. So for every application you want to access, you'll have to come up with a hotkey beforehand that is weird enough so you won't trigger it by accident but not too weird to keep forgetting it.
Hotkeys are combinations of keys that have to be pressed at the same time. Are there even enough combinations for all your applications?
Let's not forget about all your documents? And web browser favorites? You are not going to tell me that you want to assign a hotkey to each of those?
So that's where EboBar comes in. Drum roll, please.
How EboBar works!
There is one single hotkey for EboBar. Once triggered, you can enter the name of the application or document or favorite. Or an abbreviation. Don't worry, EboBar knows the names of all your important files. It's smart. To start Internet Explorer, for example, you can simply type "IE". Outlook Express can be invoked with "OE". The CNN website? "CNN". How about Peterson's fiscal report for 2001? "Peterson2001". To find out how this works in detail, check out the description of the search algorithm.
Okay. So you're trying to tell me that I'm supposed to fall back to the keyboard - you know, that thing we had BEFORE smart people invented the mouse to EASE working with my GUI?
The mouse is a handy device, but trust me - in these days, you're better off using the keyboard when trying to locate something. This here is an actual "quickbar" as seen on a friend's computer:
![]()
And this is the so-called quickbar which is quicker than the normal way to access your files, the start menu. Even if you're not a skilled typist, finding three keys on your keyboard is certainly faster than locating an itty-bitty icon somewhere on the bottom of your desktop and clicking it (preferably without accidentally hitting an adjacent icon). And IF you are a skilled typist for that matter, you'll adore EboBar.
Trying to open the Quicktime player? That's Start -> Programs ->
Quicktime -> Quicktime Player, or, in other words, four times at
which you have to locate and click on something on your screen. No, this can't
be the fastest solution.
Even if you put all your icons into your quickbar - how about your web browser's favorites? Your documents? Maybe even your entire movie or music collection? You have to use the mouse then, and that's when things get slow.
Try EboBar - you'll grow to love it. It won't clog your harddisk, it uninstalls without any trace, it won't install weird DLLs or ask for your personal details - so what can you lose?
